“I think there is always a need for pure design. With pure design, you don’t need so much decoration.” Purveyor of sleek, understated fashion, designer Jil Sander is rightfully convinced that there is luxury in simplicity.
Heidemarie Jiline Sander cultivated a knack for minimalism in her early years. In 1963, she graduated from a textile-engineering school in Germany and went on to work in fashion journalism. After which, Sander opened her first boutique in the late 1960s. Inspired by the fact that her mother stitched pants (at a time when women weren’t used to the idea), then 24-year-old Sander, launched her own fashion label.
Sander was also a clear standout in the 1970s feminist revolution. Her designs empowered women of that time to work equally alongside men. After years of constructing designs that flattered the form, a constant throughout all her collaborations, Sander earned the moniker, ‘Queen of Less’.
The Prada-Sander fallout is a key moment in 21st century fashion history. It was irreconcilable differences with Prada that resulted with Sander leaving the company in 2000 and again in 2004. Despite the setbacks, the resilient and brilliant Jil Sander continued to pursue her love for the arts and dabble in design partnerships.
JIL SANDER X UNIQLO
Designed with the new generation in mind, Jil Sander and Uniqlo collaborated for a collection that’s best described as luxuriously simple. Crafted with the fashion icon’s signature minimalist touch, the wardrobe basics are solid, versatile and sure to equip every budding fashionista with a foundation that stands on its own. This collaboration lasted for five seasons, ending in 2011.
JIL SANDER X GRANT WIGGINS
For Sander’s 2015 Fall/Winter men’s collection, she worked with artist Grant Wiggins whose work was featured on the show’s invitations and on the clothing. Wiggins licensed eight of his geometric art work to the Milan-based fashion house and the result is an artful collection of lines, shapes and colours on streamlined silhouettes.
JIL SANDER X RODENSTOCK EYEWEAR
Eyewear specialists, Rodenstock, joined forces with the minimalist label’s creative director, Rodolfo Paglialunga to create eyewear options for both ladies and men. The 2015 collection is a testament to Rodenstock’s commitment to quality and innovation, a value shared by the Jil Sander brand. Decorative sides, acetate tint and outstanding craftsmanship set the tone for this partnership.
JIL SANDER X ALOHA RAG

Both all-white designs take a cue from wrestling footwear and are available in low and high cuts. Sleek white leather and suede come together beautifully for endless outfit pairings.
